What you need to rent and drive

What you need to rent and drive

For one driver aged 32 with a Slovak (EU) licence, the paperwork is short: three things are required and one is optional. Book the car only after choosing the route and flights.

  • Your Slovak licence and passport: the original card, valid for the whole trip. Living in Germany doesn’t matter; your EU licence stays valid there and rental firms accept any valid licence. The name must match your passport and credit card. Rental requirements ↗ free
  • Optional: international driving permit. Not required by the rental firm. The German Foreign Office recommends one, mainly as a translation for police stops. If you want it, ask your local Führerscheinstelle whether they issue one for an EU licence (Berlin, for example, handles foreign licences at its Fahrerlaubnisbehörde, around €15), or get it in Slovakia. Skipping it is a reasonable choice. Official guidance ↗ ≈ €18 pp±€6 optional
  • A credit card in your name: a real credit card, not debit, with enough free limit for the deposit hold. The hold is roughly €200–500 with the rental firm’s full cover and can reach €1,000+ if you decline it; it is released after return, not charged. Card and deposit rules ↗ ≈ €500 refundable hold±€300
  • A price that includes Mexican third-party liability: TPL is mandatory on every rental and credit-card or broker cover usually doesn’t replace it. Cheap online prices that leave it out get topped up at the counter. Decide on collision / theft cover when you book. Enterprise’s TPL requirement ↗ ≈ €45 / day all-in±€15 Oaxaca · ≈ €45 / day all-in±€10 Cancún · ≈ €58 / day all-in±€15 Los Cabos

Not relevant for you: young-driver surcharges (under 25), second-driver fees and converting your licence.

At pickup and on the road: photograph the car, tyres, glass and fuel level; drive between towns in daylight on main / toll roads; watch for speed bumps (“topes”); keep valuables out of sight. Route B: the free Guest Mobility Pass in the Guest Assist app is worth having in Quintana Roo. Route C: ask the rental firm whether the dirt road to Cabo Pulmo is allowed. Driving advice ↗

Checked against the German Foreign Office and Enterprise Mexico terms on 24 October 2026. No car is booked; confirm the deposit and cover with your chosen supplier.

How to use this shortlist & photo notes

These 20 are curated for access from Frankfurt and a 14-day regional holiday. Each route is an alternative. Visit durations are planning estimates, with day trips allowing for transport; actual timing depends on your hotel, traffic, weather and current access. The outlines include two international travel days plus arrival home the following day. The dates include both international journeys and arrival home on 29 November.

Photographs are destination references credited under every image; older pictures may show access or activities that are restricted today. Follow current site rules. Wildlife encounters and clear sea conditions are never guaranteed.
