Chiang Rai + Chiang Mai, with day trips

Two northern bases, both white complexes, a Doi Inthanon nature day and your lantern ceremony. Best if you want impressive sights without repeated hotel changes.

Day trips rather than overnight mountain villages. Festival hotels may be expensive.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day by day.

Arrive CEI · leave CNX to BKK · 11 local nights · 3 stay blocks

  1. 16–17 Nov
Fly Frankfurt → Bangkok, then a protected or generously buffered BKK → Chiang Rai connection on 17 November. If the flight cannot connect safely, add a Bangkok night and shorten an optional day.
  2. 18 Nov
Collect the car. Visit Wat Rong Khun early and the Blue Temple; leave room for an unhurried lunch.
  3. 19 Nov
Wat Huay Pla Kang’s white-dragon stairs and Guan Yin, then Baan Dam if wanted. No long Chiang Mai day trip: stay in Chiang Rai.
  4. 20 Nov
Choose Doi Tung OR Choui Fong for a countryside day, or stay local. Both are optional and separately priced.
  5. 21 Nov
Drive Chiang Rai → Chiang Mai, roughly 3½–4½ hours before stops; return the car to the booked office.
  6. 22 Nov
Doi Inthanon and a guided Kew Mae Pan walk if open. Allow the whole day and dress for cold mountain air.
  7. 23 Nov
Chiang Mai old city, Wat Phra Singh, food and a quiet afternoon. Keep the festival schedule flexible.
  8. 24 Nov
Your ticketed Yi Peng mass sky-lantern release. Keep the daytime light; follow the ticketed shuttle/check-in instructions. No intercity travel today.
  9. 25 Nov
Relaxed city day and public lantern/river festivities where permitted. If 24 November tickets were unavailable, attend the mass release tonight instead, not both nights.
  10. 26 Nov
Doi Suthep and Wat Pha Lat by arranged transport. Swap for Mae Kampong or Sticky Waterfall only if you prefer.
  11. 27 Nov
Fly CNX → Bangkok BKK and stay near the airport. Do not attach a separate domestic ticket to the long-haul departure on the same day.
  12. 28–29 Nov
Depart BKK on 28 November; select a flight reaching Frankfurt by 29 November.

Core photo pins: #1, #2, #3, #7, #8, #9, #10, #14, #4, #11. Optional swaps: #5, #6, #12, #13. Choose alternatives instead of cramming every pin into the same day.

What’s included & how we estimated it

Model allowances, not date-specific quotes. Hotels assume one mid-range double room, breakfast and taxes; Chiang Mai rates include a festival premium. One standard lantern ticket each is in the core-sights row; its shuttle and buffet are not charged again. Basic rental cover, fuel, one-way return and parking are in the car row. Excluded: refundable car deposit, optional sights, enhanced zero-excess cover if wanted, vaccines/medicines, shopping and disruption costs. Deduct the IDP allowance if you already hold the right valid permit. ± margins add arithmetically; they are broad budgeting ranges, not statistical confidence intervals.

The same flight skeleton fits A, B and C. These are search links, not checked seats/final fares. Prefer a through/protected booking for the first connection; if separate, allow immigration, baggage and re-check-in. The sample uses Suvarnabhumi BKK throughout — Don Mueang DMK requires a cross-city airport transfer. If arrival cannot connect safely on 17 November, add a Bangkok night and remove an optional day, keeping the ceremony and home-arrival date fixed.

16–29 November 2026 · 2 Slovak adults living in Germany · one driver, age 32. Assume arrival Thailand / Chiang Rai 17 November, eleven local nights, Bangkok departure 28 November, Frankfurt arrival by 29 November. Stays show check-in → check-out. Exact flight schedules, hotel rooms and event seats are unconfirmed.

My default pick: A. It protects your two must-sees and offers a good city–nature balance with fewer moves. Pick B for overnight mountain scenery; C if the Pai road trip itself is a highlight. No beach or island leg is squeezed into this northern trip.

A better seasonal fit — still check the actual weather

A better seasonal fit — still check the actual weather

Northern Thailand is entering its cooler, generally drier season in November. Expect warm sightseeing days and cool mountain mornings; isolated rain and fog are still possible. It is not the same weather pattern as the southern Gulf islands. Thai government seasonal guide ↗

Your dates overlap the 24–25 November ticketed lantern events. All routes reach Chiang Mai before then and leave on 27 November. Book the event and festival hotel first; private mass-release events are separate from the public city celebrations.

Book the lantern-release ceremony first

Book the lantern-release ceremony first

Planned: 24 November 2026. Alternative: 25 November. Both dates fit all three routes. You need two tickets for one evening; nothing has been booked and seat availability is unverified.

One example is Yee Peng Lanna International ticket page ↗: it currently advertises a standard ticket at THB 4,600 pp, including a coordinated release, a lantern, buffet and return central shuttle. Budget ≈ €120 pp±€35 / ≈ €240 for both±€70. The listed central pickup is Central Festival Chiang Mai (Central Chiang Mai); exact reporting time and venue must come from your selected ticket. No guessed release-field location is shown on the map.

Reserve most of the afternoon and evening. Keep the daytime light and use the organised transport. The public city celebrations are separate; do not buy street lanterns and launch them independently. Confirm operating permissions, seller identity, exact event/date, weather policy, transfer inclusions and refund terms before payment. If using a different licensed event, update the pickup pin and allowance to that ticket.

Photographs show a previous Chiang Mai Yi Peng release, not a guarantee of the 2026 venue, crowd size, sky or access. There is no flight or hotel move on either 24 or 25 November.

What you actually need to drive

What you actually need to drive

Your plan uses a short rental for the northern countryside, then taxis, walking and the lantern-event shuttle in Chiang Mai. A car is useful outside town; keeping it through crowded festival nights is unnecessary.

  • Documents: original Slovak licence, passport and a recognised IDP with the correct car category. Carry the IDP together with the national licence; it is not a standalone licence. The Thai authority’s published guidance recognises the 1949 and 1968 conventions. Ask your German licensing authority for the suitable permit and confirm the rental branch’s requirements. Thai driving-permit guidance ↗
  • Payment: at 32, check the supplier’s normal eligibility/licence-history rules. Your N26 debit is not automatically accepted for the refundable hold. Obtain written confirmation from the exact supplier, or arrange a named credit card before pickup. Budget ≈ €300 deposit hold±€200 with enough spare balance/credit. It is not a trip expense unless retained.
  • Contract: automatic gearbox, liability and collision cover, excess, tyres/glass, theft, unpaved-road restrictions, breakdown support, fuel and a one-way CEI → CNX drop. Photograph the car at pickup and return. Allow ≈ €35 per car-day±€10 plus fuel and one-way fee. Supplier prices and cover vary; no car is reserved.
  • Roads: drive on the left. Keep mountain legs in daylight, take breaks and avoid remote shortcuts. Pai’s Route 1095 has repeated bends; choose A or B, or hire a driver, if that does not appeal. A normal automatic is suitable for the described paved routes, not for off-road tracks. A scooter is not covered by a car-only licence.
  • Fallback without self-drive: use a licensed car/driver for the intercity and day-trip portions. Indicative ≈ €110 per vehicle-day±€35, with fuel, driver meals/room, long-distance limits and one-way positioning confirmed separately. Replace the rental row with a written quote; the published totals assume self-drive.

Entry and arrival form: Current Slovak advice, including 30-day exemption ↗, Official free TDAC instructions ↗. Driving: Thai IDP guidance ↗ and Example rental rates and deposits ↗. Health: CDC Thailand ↗. Cards: N26 abroad settings ↗. Hotels and flights are not live quotes. THB × 0.026 is a rough EUR budgeting assumption, not a current FX claim. Margins represent planning uncertainty and add arithmetically.

All twenty photos, map code/styles, route data and the local checklist are embedded in this single HTML file. Online vector tiles, map fonts/sprites and external links still need internet. Background labels prefer English, then Latin transliterations where English is unavailable. Lines are schematic, not driving directions; photos show destinations or clearly captioned wider-area/historical scenes. Each image has a credit/licence link. The mass-release photo is not a promise of the 2026 setting. No summit trek, border crossing or unrestricted lantern launch is part of the plan. Nothing has been booked.
