2Colombo: Fort, Pettah & Galle Face
The strongest city chapter: trading streets, everyday markets and an evening waterfront walk.
Plan your visit
Fort means the Colombo district, not Galle Fort. Use arranged taxis or apps and avoid demonstrations.
Ancient cities and rock temples, green tea hills, wild elephants and the Indian Ocean. Choose B for hills, safari and coast, or C for ancient cities, Wilpattu and Colombo.
A full Kandy day, three Ella nights, a focused Udawalawe safari stop and three nights on the south coast. Less heritage-ticket spending than A; more room for walks and rain.
Mountain weather can hide views; the safari stop still adds a hotel move.
English-first labels. Stay pins are suggested areas; numbered pins refer to the place details below.
Every line is schematic: road, rail and walking links do not follow navigable tracks. Sight links are return day trips; optional links are alternatives, not extra commitments. Pins are approximate areas/access points. Train links are distinct from the driver’s road fallback. Street-map tiles need internet. © OpenStreetMap contributors.

Three nights in Anuradhapura, three near Sigiriya and three in Colombo, bookended by Negombo. Best for living heritage, one full safari and a proper city stay without hill-country transfers.
No dedicated beach resort stay. Many stairs and heritage sites; choose B if coast time is essential.

2The strongest city chapter: trading streets, everyday markets and an evening waterfront walk.
Fort means the Colombo district, not Galle Fort. Use arranged taxis or apps and avoid demonstrations.
3Climb the 5th-century ancient fortress atop a massive 180-metre granite monolith, with water gardens below and sweeping views from the summit.
Exposed, steep stairs; postpone during thunderstorms. Official foreign-adult entry is USD 35; the EUR figure allows for currency movement.
4A memorable view across to Sigiriya from another rocky summit.
Optional alternative to another climb. The final section involves scrambling; take grippy shoes and do not climb in storms or on slippery rock.
5Painted cave interiors and rows of Buddha statues on a rocky hillside.
Cover shoulders and knees; remove footwear where required. The cave-temple ticket is separate from the CCF museum ticket.
6Palace ruins, shrines and monumental stone Buddhas spread over an ancient capital.
Use the driver between clusters or hire a bicycle if the weather suits. Official adult entry is USD 30; a guide or bike costs extra.
7An elephant-focused wildlife afternoon from the Cultural Triangle.
Let a licensed guide choose the currently accessible park. November is not the peak elephant Gathering season; sightings are never promised. Marker shows Minneriya access area.
8A hill-country city with a lakeside walk and an important living Buddhist temple.
The estimate covers the temple, not a private guide. Dress modestly and allow security queues.
9Huge trees, palms and a slower green break outside Kandy.
Fits the full Kandy sightseeing day on route B. Confirm the current foreign-visitor tariff.
10Tea slopes, villages and mountain views from a slow railway journey.
Do not assume a through Kandy–Ella train. Road to Nanu Oya first; reserve only a confirmed Nanu Oya–Ella service. Carry a road-transfer fallback and stay inside doors. The map pins Ella station and shows a schematic rail link.
11An accessible ridge walk above tea country, without a long mountain expedition.
This is Little Adam’s Peak near Ella, not the pilgrimage mountain Sri Pada. Start early; skip exposed sections in lightning, cloud or heavy rain.
12A graceful stone viaduct in a green valley near Ella.
Use an established path to a viewpoint; do not walk on the track or wait on the bridge. Local tuk-tuk access is in the small-rides allowance.
13See how tea is made, then linger over a tasting with views of the hills.
Choose a working factory tour such as Uva Halpewatte only after checking its operating day. The pin is an approximate factory area; production is not guaranteed.
14A focused safari stop on the road from Ella to the south coast.
Use a licensed safari jeep. Keep distance from wildlife; no feeding or chasing. Park fees, taxes and a jeep shared only by the two of you are included in this allowance.
18Observe the rehabilitation of orphaned elephants from the visitor area.
Optional alongside the safari. Confirm feeding/viewing times directly; observation only, no touching, riding or bottle-feeding. Separate from the national park entry.
15Walk the fort streets, ramparts and cafés in a compact coastal old town.
Public streets are free. The allowance is for an optional local history walk; museums and food are separate. Avoid exposed ramparts in storms.
17A broad bay for relaxed coast days and, when conditions suit, a beginner surf lesson.
The beach is free; the estimate is for one optional lesson with board. Choose an instructor after checking sea conditions; keep a pool-day alternative.
19Vast stupas, monastic ruins and active pilgrimage sites give the ancient capital a very different character from Sigiriya.
Explore independently and use the driver between clusters. USD 30 CCF ticket covers designated monuments; some sacred sites have separate charges, covered by this sight’s ticket and local-fee allowance.
20A full safari day among natural lakes and forest, with a quieter feel than a rushed southern park circuit.
Pin shows Hunuwilagama entrance, not a leopard location. Choose a licensed jeep, confirm wet-weather access, and accept that leopards and sloth bears are never guaranteed.
Not included in the selected itinerary.
16An easy south-coast base close enough for repeated Galle visits without another hotel move.
A beach stay is not a promise of safe sea swimming. Check flags and local advice each day; book a pool and flexible cancellation.

The sample assumes an overnight outbound and eleven local nights. A different arrival day changes the hotels and activities; keep 29 November as your latest Frankfurt arrival.
16–29 November 2026 · 2 adults · Slovak passports, living in Germany. Plan: Frankfurt departure 16 Nov, CMB arrival 17 Nov, eleven local nights, CMB departure 28 Nov, home by 29 Nov. Stay dates are check-in → check-out. Flight times and seat availability are not confirmed.
My pick for your mix: B. It gives Ella more breathing room and keeps a safari and south-coast finish. Choose C if Sigiriya, living heritage and a proper city stay matter more than the beach and train. C avoids mountain travel, but November rain can still affect northern roads and Wilpattu.
October–November is the second inter-monsoon: rain and thunderstorms can affect the whole island, including the hills and coast. These are flexible sightseeing trips, not guaranteed sun holidays. I have favoured the south coast over an east-coast beach itinerary, but safe swimming is still a daily local decision. Choose a pool and flexible hotel terms. Official seasonal weather guide ↗
Current travel advice also flags fuel rationing and possible flight disruption via Middle Eastern hubs. Ask the transport operator how your route will run, and check the airline before committing. Current travel advice ↗
Railway update: plan road travel from Kandy to Nanu Oya, with only the Nanu Oya → Ella rail section conditional on a confirmed running train. The current official reopening notice covers Nanu Oya–Badulla, not a through Kandy–Ella service. Government reopening notice ↗
For these itineraries I recommend a car with a local driver. It keeps the flexibility you wanted from a car, without making unfamiliar left-hand traffic and wet mountain roads your job. The German Foreign Office currently advises against self-drive rentals. It also reports fuel restrictions; confirm the driver’s fuel plan before paying. Current German travel advice ↗

Every route has its own map and recommended overnight-area pins. All lines are schematic: they distinguish driver/taxi, walking and train; they are not turn-by-turn routes. A safari pin marks an access/meeting area, not a wildlife location. All photos, Leaflet code/styles, route data and checklist code are embedded in this one HTML file. Map background tiles and external links need internet. Each photograph has its own licence/credit link; displayed crops are destination references, not promises of weather, wildlife or a hotel booking. Nothing has been booked.
