1Arusha town
A gentle first taste of northern Tanzania: local food, small shops and everyday city life.
Plan your visit
Use a local guide or hotel-arranged transport; do not force a city visit after a late arrival.
Three genuinely different mainland trips, each finishing on Zanzibar. Choose one route, not all three: classic big-game landscapes, a quieter river safari, or green foothills and walking.
Tarangire, Ngorongoro and central Serengeti, then Stone Town and Kendwa. Best for a first safari if you accept a busy mainland section and an explicitly reviewed domestic flight.
Highest cost; busy safari and conditional bush flight

Hotel and activity pins show approximate areas, not booked properties or exact entrances. All lines are schematic, including roads, boats and flight links; they are not driving directions or navigable tracks. Unconnected sight pins are optional day trips or alternatives, not extra transfers promised in the itinerary. Select a transfer below for timing estimates. The street-map background needs internet. A city arrival, three nights near Nyerere’s eastern entrance, then a scheduled ferry to Stone Town and six nights in Jambiani. The best alternative if you want wildlife without a bush flight.
Long road transfers; weather-dependent ferry

Moshi’s coffee country and a Kilimanjaro forest day hike, one Arusha National Park day, then two Stone Town nights and a northwest beach finish. No summit expedition and no Serengeti.

Only places assigned to the selected option.
1A gentle first taste of northern Tanzania: local food, small shops and everyday city life.
Use a local guide or hotel-arranged transport; do not force a city visit after a late arrival.
2Elephants, river scenery and huge baobabs make a strong first safari day.
Visit on the way from Arusha to Karatu; allow roughly 2–3 hours to the park gate plus onward travel. Wildlife is not guaranteed.
3A spectacular caldera with concentrated wildlife and a very different setting from the open plains.
Ask for the crater descent permit and vehicle fee to be included. Early start; warm layers for the rim.
4Broad grasslands, rocky kopjes and resident predators: the main reason to choose the northern route.
Base around Seronera. Do not choose a distant camp for a promised migration location; November movements depend on rain.
5A community-guided walk through farms and village life offers a contrast to vehicle-based safari.
Use a community-run guide, agree the price and ask before photographing people. Replace part of a park day rather than squeezing it in.
6Groundwater forest and lakeside habitats provide a smaller-scale safari alternative.
Choose this OR Tarangire in the sample schedule; flamingos, tree-climbing lions and lake access are not guaranteed.
7A deep-time perspective on the landscapes between Ngorongoro and Serengeti.
Optional stop on 19 November only if the driver confirms daylight and gate timings. Never sacrifice the transfer buffer.
8Historic streets and harbour views add a real city chapter before the bush and island.
Stay with a guide in central areas; leave valuables secured and use traceable, hotel-arranged taxis.
9A busy trading district for a more local view of Dar beyond the waterfront.
Go in daylight with a trusted guide, without prominent valuables. Skip crowds or demonstrations; do not treat this as a night outing.
10Woodland, lakes and open clearings with fewer vehicles than the northern headline parks.
Choose an accessible Mtemere / eastern-sector camp that is open in November. Rain affects tracks and wildlife visibility.
11See the safari landscape from the water, with hippos, crocodiles and river birds.
Book through the camp with a licensed operator, lifejackets and current water-level checks. No swimming or approaching animals.
12Green foothills, a waterfall walk and a Chagga-led coffee experience near Moshi.
Book a local guide; trails can be slippery in November. Enjoy the waterfall from land; avoid inland freshwater swimming.
13Walk the lower Marangu rainforest route toward Mandara rather than attempting a rushed summit.
Licensed operator, guide and park permits required. Agree a turnaround time; Mandara is around 2,700 m. Clear summit views are not guaranteed.
14Fig trees and clear spring water offer a scenic stop between the Moshi and Arusha areas.
Optional dry-land visit only. German official advice says not to swim in inland waters due to infection risk; skip if roads are wet or the detour is long.
15Forest, lakes and Mount Meru scenery in a compact park, with guided walking possible.
Request a ranger-led walk explicitly; it requires separate arrangements and is weather-dependent. This is not a Mount Meru summit trek.
16UNESCO-listed lanes, carved doors, the waterfront and the history of the Indian Ocean trading world.
Use a guide for context, including the history of slavery. Dress modestly in town; use arranged transport after dark.
17A guided forest and mangrove visit with the chance to see Zanzibar red colobus monkeys.
Keep distance, never feed monkeys, and wear closed shoes. Combine with an east-coast transfer only if timing works.
18The northwest coast generally makes everyday sea swimming easier than the strongly tidal east coast.
Still check local tides, sea conditions and hotel beach access. Pick this coast if swimming matters more than kiteboarding.
19A quieter east-coast rhythm, long tidal flats and a good base for unhurried days.
Low tide can put the sea far from shore. Check the hotel beach, pool and tide chart; November is not a guaranteed kite-wind season.
20A weather-dependent snorkelling outing off the northeast coast, best treated as an optional bonus.
Choose a licensed conservation-minded boat with lifejackets. No dolphin chasing or touching coral; the private island is not a public beach stop.

Arrive JRO · depart ZNZ · twelve nights · Highest of the three
Five hotel/camp areas over twelve nights. For less moving or no bush flight, drop Serengeti, add Karatu / Arusha time and re-plan the island connection rather than adding a same-day drive-and-ferry marathon.
Estimated cost for 2 travellers · 16–29 Nov. Broad estimates, not live quotes.

Arrive DAR · depart ZNZ · twelve nights · Usually below the northern private safari
Five stay blocks, but only four distinct areas; three safari nights and seven Zanzibar nights. This is not rain-proof: a cancelled ferry requires flexibility, not an automatic last-minute local flight.

Arrive JRO · depart ZNZ · twelve nights · Usually lowest; permits and guides still add up
Four overnight areas and more city / walking time. It is a low-altitude nature trip, not a cheap substitute for a full safari or a Kilimanjaro summit. If avoiding local flights is essential, route B is the cleaner fit.
Estimated cost for 2 travellers · 16–29 Nov. Broad estimates, not live quotes.

The useful booking is an open-jaw / multi-city ticket: Frankfurt → JRO or DAR, then Zanzibar → Frankfurt. The searches below are round-trip gateway comparisons only; they do not book that open-jaw journey or the domestic connection. Live prices and schedules have not been checked.
Your dates: 16–29 November 2026, two adults, economy searches. The sample stays assume arrival in Tanzania on 16 November, twelve local nights, departure on 28 November and Frankfurt arrival by 29 November. Map stay ranges show check-in → check-out. Flight schedules are not confirmed.
My pick for the iconic first safari: route A. Choose B if avoiding local flights matters most, or C if you prefer walking, culture and fewer jeep days. City time here means Arusha, Dar and Stone Town—not a Mexico City-sized urban trip. Relative costs are planning comparisons, not quotes.
Expect short rains in the north and Zanzibar, with the wet season starting in the south. Current German travel advice also flags a risk of above-average rainfall in parts of Tanzania in October–December 2026. Roads, trails, ferries and flights may be disrupted. This is not a guaranteed dry-season holiday.
Air-safety decision: all Tanzanian-certified airlines are currently on the EU Air Safety List. This does not ban their domestic flights, but it is a material safety warning. Routes A and C include a conditional local flight; review the operating carrier, not just the seller. Route B avoids domestic flights using road transfers and a scheduled ferry, which has its own sea and safety risks. EU source · Current travel advice.
For these routes, my recommendation is a safari driver-guide plus arranged island transfers. A rental car is not the default here. Use a properly equipped guided 4×4 for parks and long safari transfers; a normal hire car is not a substitute.

Twenty distinct destination ideas, not twenty compulsory visits: seven northern, four southern, four foothill and five shared Zanzibar ideas. Route filters keep the island shortlist visible. Suggested stays are areas, not selected hotels. Dates and travel times are planning estimates, not bookings. The two added nights are allocated to Zanzibar; the northern itinerary still has one full central Serengeti day. Trade a beach night for more safari time only after rechecking flights and camp availability.

No airline, ferry, safari, lodge or excursion has been booked. No exact fares or date-specific seat availability are claimed. Current advice includes political / security risks and restrictions in the far south; these routes do not include the Mozambique-border region or coastal islands south of Kisiju. Recheck the official advice before paying and before departure.
